Head coach Ron Hunter coached from a swivel chair after tearing his Achilles tendon in a postgame celebration with his son and star guard, R.J. Hunter after winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. He fell off his chair late in the game after watching his son score 12 of his 16 points in the final 2:39 to win 57-56.
Hunter was ice-cold for much of the game with only one field goal in the first 37 minutes but turned it on late when his team needed him the most. He led the Panthers in scoring and had three of the team’s 13 steals in the game compared to only two from the Bears.
Turnovers killed Baylor in the closing minutes as Georgia State finished their comeback with a dagger of a three-point shot from Hunter that would have counted for three in the NBA. Baylor had 21 turnovers, the most in the last three seasons.
Baylor played like they didn’t want to lose while Georgia State attacked and took the game from them and Hunter didn’t shy away from shooting the ball despite failing to do much in the first 37 minutes of the game.
But clutch is everything in sports and Hunter certainly was that and they look like they are going to be a fun team to watch in the round of 32 against the winner of Xavier and Georgia State.
