The No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones are on upset alert after UAB outplayed them in the first half in the NCAA Tournament.

Upsets are what turns the NCAA Tournament into March Madness and we could be one half of basketball away from the No. 3 seed in the South Region going home earlier than expected.

More from March Madness

Fred Hoiberg’s Iowa State team played much of the first half without their top player, Georges Niang who got two quick fouls and had to sit for a large chunk of time in the opening half. Without him on the court, the UAB Blazers were able to take a 31-28 lead at the half and make a lot of people in Ames, IA. nervous and people who picked Iowa State to make it to the Final Four ready to rip up their brackets already.

UAB started 3-15 shooting before making 10 of their next 20 attempts to finish the half strong and head into the break with a three-point cushion. Although, they will have to worry about Niang more in the second half after Hoiberg had to play it safe and sit his star player and avoid a critical third foul.

He wasn’t the only Iowa State player in foul trouble as Dustin Hogue and Naz Long also have two fouls. Matt Thomas leads Iowa State with eight points and Jameel McKay leads in rebounds with seven.

The Blazers are led by Robert Brown’s 10 points and William Lee’s eight as UAB looks to pull off the first of what will be many upsets in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State has been in this position many times before this year and have had a lot of comeback victories this year, however.

Do you think UAB can pull off the upset or is Iowa State going to pull it out in the second half and win? Let us know in the comments section below.
