Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho confident in Premier League title race

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is confident in his club and the Premier League title race.

Chelsea was dismissed from the Champions League rather unceremoniously by a short-handed Paris Saint-Germain squad at home. The silver lining with that loss might be that it helps their Premier League title race by lightening their schedule.

They are sitting with a comfortable six-game lead heading into the final stretch of the season, and manager Jose Mourinho thinks his team holds a significant advantage.

“We are in front, the advantage is not half a body, the advantage is significant, but there is still a long way to go,” Mourinho said, via Sky Sports.

“I would enjoy it much more if we had 20 points more, but normal is a good situation for us.

“In this nine years at Chelsea we were never at the end of March with six points more than the second-placed team so we have a good situation in our hands and the way we worked last week, and the way we work this week, I think the players are very confident.

“I think the tendency of our team is to improve until the end of the season, because normally in this period the normal tendency is for the teams to accumulate fatigue and stress and big matches in the Champions League.

“In this moment, our situation gives us space to work, space to improve. I repeat not an accumulation of fatigue. If things go in the direction I expect and the players expect, we can finish the season in a very strong way.

“I think it’s still five in the title race, because the distance is still mathematically possible. The fifth, the fourth, don’t have to fight against one, they have to overcome three. The distance is so short and mathematically I see that things are open.”
