Charles Barkley isn’t a fan of analytics and isn’t a fan of people saying Kentucky could beat an NBA team — not even the Knicks.
The Kentucky Wildcats are set to play on Saturday as they continue their journey to be one of the best college basketball teams in history. But as is the case every year when there is a dominant team in the mix, the pundits begin to discuss if a mighty college team could topple a lowly professional team.
That was the topic of discussion during March Madness coverage on Saturday afternoon, but Charles Barkley was having none of it. When it was suggested for the millionth time that the Kentucky Wildcats could beat one of the NBA teams at the bottom of the standings, Barkley stepped in to stick up for his former employers.
Barkley said he was going to take things to an all-time low — and he did — suggesting that the New York Knicks could beat the Kentucky Wildcats.
This is always a stupid debate but for some reason we always have to have it. Could the Crimson Tide beat the Jaguars? Could the 76ers lose to a top college team? For some reason people want to have this debate and it’s circular reasoning in the worst.
Jason Whitlock said it best a few months ago on PTI when he addressed whether the 76ers would lose to Kentucky. The bottom line is that even a bad NBA team is still a team of professionals and Kentucky is still a bunch of college kids with college training living up to and exceeding at college standards.
The Knicks may be the worst team in basketball,but they’re the worst professional team in basketball. Their players still have professional training in NBA facilities with league doctors and trainers. It may be cute and dismissive to say that the Knicks are so bad they’d lose to Kentucky, but it’s bad logic.
