By Kris Whelan
No.8- Thierry Henry
Henry retired at the end of the last MLS season and he left a legacy of greatness. He has the distinct achievment of being a success in four countries in addition to winning the biggest prizes in international soccer. Some said he came to the MLS after he reached his peak and as such was just looking for a nice quiet place to fade away while the money rolled in. He proved his critics wrong by being named in the MLS best XI in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Despite his achievements while here in the States, you can’t argue that his legacy was made years prior to his arrival on American soil.
Thierry Henry was born in Les Ulis, Essonne, France in 1977 and made his professional debut in 1994. He was known for his lighting quick pace and his exquisite finishing. He won titles in France, England and Spain. It was his time at Arsenal that propelled him to legendary status with his most prolific years being in England. He won the FA Cup on three occasions and the English Premier League twice. He was named the top scorer in the League four seasons in a row, winning the European Golden Boot in two of those years.
He left Arsenal which broke the hearts of many fans because it seemed he still had a lot to offer, and indeed he did. Henry went to Spanish giants Barcelona and went on to claim to La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League medal.
In addition to a glamorous club career, the Frenchman enjoyed outstanding success on the international level. He won the World Cup and European Cup, finishing runner up in the World Cup on another occasion.
"“He’s a wizard with his feet and is blessed with a gift for scoring goals. His best quality is his speed while the ball is at his feet. He may be the fastest man ever to lace up a football boot. No defender in the world can keep up with him.”- French defender Lillian Thuram"
Now a pundit for Sky Sports, the Frenchman is remembered as an all time great and possibly the greatest striker to ever grace the English Premier League.
