The Baylor Bears may have a secret weapon on their hands offensively next season with 410-pound LaQuan McGowan.

Baylor Bears head football coach Art Briles is known as one of the innovators of the modern spread offense, which has run rampant through college football. Different schools alter the offense slightly to adapt to their personnel.

For Baylor, he has preferred small, quicker receivers. That could be changing (or at least could present a valuable trick play potential). That’s due to a video surfacing from Baylor’s Spring Practice showing 410-pound offensive lineman LaQuan McGowan catching a pass.

McGowan has been practicing this Spring as an H-back and tight end, despite his rather large frame.

In Baylor’s 42-41 loss to Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl on January 1, McGowan caught a touchdown on what was most definitely viewed by the Spartans defense as a trick play.

Baylor is also working on replacing Bryce Petty, who leaves the Waco campus as probably the second most noted quarterback in Baylor Bears football history, after only Heisman Trophy winning Robert Griffin III.

Seth Russell is the expected starter, but has not yet been named as such, and as a report following the Spring Game says, he struggled Friday night.

If it’s not Russell it will be between Chris Johnson and Jarrett Stidham.
