The NFL Veteran Combine was this weekend, and it was a predictably sad affair where once alright players showed their age and lack of ability live on television.

This weekend saw the NFL Veteran Combine take place and it was an event that was mildly intriguing but mostly just sad. The idea and motives behind the Veteran Combine were noble, but the end result was a hodgepodge of old and slow guys who were forced to realize their uselessness in their profession.

What did we really expect from this though? If you were expecting someone to come out and light up the NFL with insane stats, then that’s to assume most NFL scouting departments aren’t doing their jobs. What was proven was what was expected — old guys can’t play professional football.

Players who didn’t have what it took to make an NFL roster still don’t have what it takes to make an NFL roster.

Similarly, NFL players who were once young and fast are now old and slow.

Finally, NFL players who were once able to get jobs are still old and pissed off that they can no longer play like it was 2005.

So what was the point of this entire combine? Basically, everyone who showed up proved nothing more than they couldn’t hack it in the NFL. That’s public shaming at it’s most painful, and it was hard to watch and hear about.

It’s not like Michael Bush, Felix Jones and Michael Sam ever had Hall of Fame careers that are withering away. Rather, they were middle of the road guys at best and are being shamed into the realization that they can no long do the one thing they knew how to do best.

Football is a wicked vixen, and this was a sad event that we hopefully never have to watch again. It was sad for the players, it was sad for fans who remembered it was on and it was sad for the NFL for shaming their former employees on a public stage.
