Michigan State guard Travis Trice was outstanding on Sunday, scoring 23 points to help the Spartans knock off Virginia in the Round of 32.

However, Trice’s mom might have been the real MVP of the family for the day.

That Michigan State fan screaming loudly during every Virginia free-throw attempt? Yeah, that’s Trice’s mom.

It’s hard to question Julie Trice’s methods after Sunday’s Spartan victory. Virginia shot 69.2 percent at the free-throw line and missed a couple of big free throws down the stretch. Thanks in large part to the mother-son combo, Michigan State is headed to yet another Sweet 16.

This season will mark the fourth consecutive year in which Izzo’s squad has made it to the regional semifinal. If Travis continues to play at the level he did Sunday and his mother continues to scream at the level she did Sunday, the Spartans will have a real good shot to reach the Elite 8 regardless of who they face in the next round (Dayton or Oklahoma).

Travis is averaging 14.8 points (39.2 percent shooting from the field, 36.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc), 5.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game this season.
