After a 26-7 record, the South Florida women’s basketball team found themselves in the NCAA Women’s Tournament as a six-seed in the Albany Region. In the first round, South Florida squared up against 11-seed LSU and in a tight game, the Bulls held off the Tigers to get the 73-64 win and move on to the second round to play the Louisville Cardinals. Junior guard Courtney Williams led the team with 17 points and added 12 rebounds and six assists. This is South Florida’s fourth NCAA Women’s Tournament appearance. The Bulls were out in the second round in 2014 and hope to not repeat that same destiny.
The Louisville women had an impressive season in the ACC this year after a 25-6 record they were given a 3-seed in the Albany Region behind Connecticut and Kentucky (who was already upset by Dayton). In their first game of the tournament, Louisville blew out 14-seed BYU 86-53. Louisville was led by star freshman forward Myisha Hines-Allen who had 19 points and 8 rebounds. This is Louisville’s 18th NCAA Women’s Tournament appearance. The team finished as National Runner Up in 2009 and 2013 and lost to Connecticut both times. They’ll hope to get some revenge against their former conference rival in the Elite Eight.
The winner of South Florida and Louisville will go on to play 7-seed Dayton who shocked everyone when they beat 2-seed Kentucky by a score of 99-94 in the second round.
