There was a threat on President Obama’s niece on Monday night. The President’s niece, Leslie Robinson, is a player on the Princeton women’s basketball team and they were facing off against number 1 ranked Maryland in the NCAA women’s tournament.
Maryland beat Princeton 85-70 on Monday night to move to the next round in the tournament. Soon after the game though, the Maryland police department released this statement:

“On March 23, 2015 at approximately 3pm UMPD received a call stating that the caller had received a text from a third party indicating that a male that she knew had a gun and mentioned president Obama’s niece.
UMPD officers began an immediate investigation into this call and notified the United States Secret Service. As a precautionary measure, security at tonight’s Maryland vs. Princeton game was increased. Our investigation reveals at this time that these details that were passed on from this third party are unsubstantiated.”
President Obama was in attendance when Princeton took on Wisonsin-Green Bay, but he was not on hand when Princeton was eliminated by Maryland. The Princeton head coach Courtney Banghart was aware of the threat before the game, but Robinson didn’t have any idea of the situation until after it was taken care of. Robinson did not appear in either of the games during the tournament.
“It’s incredibly disappointing that the first question we get (after) being 31-1 (and) in the NCAA Tournament is about a freak,” Banghart said.
“College Park police, I’m sure, had that under control. Leslie is safe. She’s in my locker room. No one loves her like I do. She’s an important part of our team,” Banghart added. “Keep the freaks out of our gym.”
It seems that it would be a pretty big distraction to deal with some threat like that during the whole contest. At least Robinson was unaware of the situation and she only found out about it after the whole deal was taken care of. That still could hold some weight on her in the future. How is Robinson going to feel when Princeton is in the tournament again next season? Will she feel safe on the court or will she have a distraction held over her because of some freaks threat?
