The Washington Redskins are undecided on whether or not they’ll pick up Robert Griffin III’s fifth year option.
The Washington Redskins traded away a lot of assets to move up in the draft and acquire Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III. That move looked like it was worth it when he lead the Redskins to the playoffs in his rookie season.
Since then he has suffered a major injury that kept him off the field for an extended period of time. Since coming back he has struggled to find his footing and regain his rookie season form and magic.
Now the Redskins face the hard task of deciding what to do with Griffin, whether they give up on him or if they try to build around him and recreate that rookie magic. As of right now, the Redskins don’t know which way they’re going.
From CSN Washington:
"General Manager Scot McCloughan told CSNwashington.com’s Tarik El-Bashir today that the team has not yet decided whether or not the team will pick up the fifth-year option on Griffin’s contract. The option would pay Griffin about $16 million in 2016."
There is no need for the Redskins to decide, they have time to collect more data and make the decision. What if that magic is rekindled during the 2015 season, what if he gets injured or stinks it up? Both would influence the Redskins decision in 2016.
The real issue with the Redskins being undecided on his future is how it affects their draft strategy. If they’re undecided and Marcus Mariota or Jameis slide down to them they’re going to face a tough decision. To be undecided going into the draft would be unrealistic, they’ll probably be leaning to the post-Griffin era in that situation.
