NFL Free Agency is about two weeks old and one of the better players who is still available is wide receiver Michael Crabtree. Sure, Crabtree hasn’t really lived up to his first-round expectations, but it’s not like he’s been a bad receiver over the course of his NFL career. Considering their need at the wide receiver position, it’s a bit surprising that the San Francisco 49ers haven’t re-signed the Texas Tech product.
According to the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers are open to re-signing Crabtree, however, the chances of them doing so are unlikely.
General manager Trent Baalke talked about Crabtree and the possibility of them re-signing him in the coming weeks.
"“As long as Michael’s out there, he’s just like any other (unrestricted free agent),” Baalke said. “You never say never. Michael did a heck of a job with us for six years.”"
Matt Barrows, the 49ers beat writer that wrote the article, said that Crabtree complained late in the season last year that he was used too much of the third option. If he were to come back in 2015, Crabtree would find himself in a similar position as Anquan Boldin is coming back for another year and Torrey Smith just signed a huge contract with the team this offseason.
Regardless, Crabtree is one of Colin Kaepernick’s favorite receivers. Before 2014, Crabtree and Vernon Davis were his favorite pass-catchers, but with Davis’ downfall this past season, bringing back an experienced guy like Crabtree makes sense. It should also be said that the Miami Dolphins have been the only team really in the sweepstakes for Crabtree and they seem to not be in the running for him, as a week has gone by since his Miami visit. Crabtree would likely only cost around $5 million a year.
