It was reported that the Tennessee Titans had no idea Jake Locker was retiring.

Ever since the Tennessee Titans drafted Jake Locker eighth overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, both sides have really failed, as they each have brought each other down. Although Locker had failed tremendously in his NFL tenure, it should be said that he never really had much talent to work with in Tennessee. After being replaced by the likes of Zach Mettenberger and even Charlie Whitehurst in 2014, it’s no surprise that the Titans and Locker have had a bit of a rocky relationship.

According to the Seattle Times, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said that the Titans were unaware of Locker’s plans to retire and they found out the same time everyone else did. When asked when he had learned of Locker’s retirement, Whisenhutn responded simply like this.

"“Same time you guys did,’’"

Despite hearing the news late, Whisenhunt did indeed say that he talked with Locker multiples times throughout the offseason. However, nothing of retirement ever came about.

"“I asked him how he was doing with the rehab from his shoulder, and he said he was doing great and working,’’ Whisenhunt said. “But we didn’t talk about that.’’"

Whisenhunt would go on to say that he respected the decision Locker made. It should also be said that Whisenhunt also talked about Locker and the likes of him returning. However, he would also say that he is unsure if Locker would ever even do that.

"“I’ve only been around Jake for a year and I know he is very competitive and I know how hard he works, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he did,’’ Whisenhunt said. “But I don’t know that.’’"

It’s truly a shame that Locker never lived up to his top-ten expectations, but it also goes to show how a player can flame out if he is not drafted by the right team and put in the right situation. A number of concussion injuries have also dampened his career. Because of this story, this just goes to show the relationship Locker and the Titans had.
