The Portland Trail Blazers’ in-arena blimp at Moda Center crashed once again

The Portland Trail Blazers feature a Ford Landmark blimp in the rafters which travels around the arena during home games at Moda Center. Apparently it is not very sturdy or very well connected. It fell out of the rafters into unassuming fans at a game in December against the Indiana Pacers.

And it happened again tonight.

The good news, assuming there is any, is that it took place well before the Blazers’ game against the league-leading Golden State Warriors, being broadcast nationally on TNT.

Moda Center, formerly known as the Rose Garden, opened in 1995, making it 20-years-old. That should not be long enough to have problems such as this.

Malfunctions are one thing, but this would seem to indicate a structural issue. Then again, it’s easy to be rough on the Trail Blazers. Bill Simmons apparently hates them, if you ask their fans.

The Blazers have had back luck on the court this year as well. Wesley Matthews is out for the season after he ruptured his Achilles tendon on March 5. All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge looked like too would be out a while prior to the All-Star break but played through it.

However, he’s back on the shelf after injuring his hand on Saturday night.
