The Masters 2015: Now is the time for Rory McIlroy to take over Tiger’s legacy
By Jonathan Rix
Spring is here and the Master’s soon to come and without Tiger atop the leaderboard, now is the time for Rory McIlroy to take over his sport.
Golf has always been a test of a man’s character and since Tiger’s true character has been exposed, his game has crumbled.
Watching Tiger duff shot after shot in his short game a couple of weeks ago as he tries to recover, has made many a duffer feel better. Even the best miss shots around the green.
But the reality now is that Tiger is no longer the best.
The vacuum created when Tiger began his precipitous fall has been filled with the youth, joy and power of Rory McIlroy. The inevitable toppling of Jack Nicklaus 18 major victories, once a simple question of how much Tiger would surpass him by, has been stunted with Tiger stuck at 14 majors since 2008 with.
At 38, with with his skills and confidence eroding, the young players no longer awed by his power are now driving it past Tiger and are hitting the fairway. It seems the bully within that drove Tiger, much like Michael Jordan’s famed competitive spirit, has crashed just like his Cadillac Escalade.
Golf needs greatness and Rory McIlroy has all the makings of a true champion. Hailing from Ireland, close to the home of golf in Scotland, he has a solid family, a winning smile and a golf game that is becoming dominant. With 5 majors under his belt at age 25, bookmakers have Rory as the name to beat in every major that comes to tee. The Masters is about the purity, and pristine essence of golf that Augusta presents to the world in the rebirth of spring and the Azealas that line the 13th hole. Even HD fails to do it justice.
With a character to match his game the time is now for Rory McIlroy to put his stamp on greatness and leave the Tiger era in the past.
