Pirates superstar OF Andrew McCutchen cuts his dreads (Video)
By Will Osgood
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has long been known in baseball for his dreads, but as of Wednesday, they are no more.
No matter your thoughts on religion, or the Bible, the story of Samson cutting his long hair and then losing all his might is a fascinating one. Major League Baseball may have their own Samson story developing.
Andrew McCutchen, who seemingly possessed the longest dreads in baseball (and in sum, the longest head of hair), got quite a trim on Wednesday.
That McCutchen documented the harrowing experience speaks somewhat of his character. So too does the fact that he decided to cut his beloved dreads for the sake of charity.

The music in that video, if you don’t recognize it is from KB–an artist on Reach Records, which is owned by Grammy-winning artist Lecrae. Though a much larger debate exists, basically they are a group of rappers who are Christians.
McCutchen and other well-known athletes like Steph Curry and Bubba Watson are tight with that group of people. So the Samson narrative is probably a little more profound than simply one of the best hitters in baseball cutting his long hair.
That said, McCutchen has a fresh new look, one he hopes will help aide him and his Pirates to take the next step this season, perhaps to the World Series for the first time in the franchise’s history since 1979. A three-time top-3 finisher in the National League MVP race (and 2013 winner), McCutchen will have to find his power somewhere else from now on.
Or the two are actually unrelated. Either way, he’s got a fresh new look, and did it for a good cause.
