At the NFL Annual Meeting on Wednesday, Payton did his best to dispel rumors that the team would move their longtime signal caller, according to Sports Illustrated.
Fueling the speculation, were the trades of Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills. With the Saints trading two of Brees’ top targets, many were jumping to the conclusion that a move could follow with the quarterback involved as well.
With the team also having two first-round picks, some speculated the team could use those picks to move for a quarterback. Sean Payton has said that the team could trade for a quarterback if the value is there.
Still, it doesn’t appear the Saints plan on trading Brees either. Payton speaking at the NFL Annual Meeting, also understands that he can’t control speculation either.
"“You can’t control it,” Payton said Wednesday at the NFL Annual Meeting. “What do you do when there’s no truth to any of it? There’s not one iota. So, if someone’s written something like that, then it’s either been taken out of context completely or just fabricated. I think we’re in an age where we’re seeing a lot of speculative reporting as opposed to a story.”"
Payton also noted at the meeting that he is in constant contact with Brees and the two speak every week.
"“There’s no truth to any of that,” Payton said. “He’s a part of where we’re going and we’ve got a number of areas we’ve got to improve on, but his production and where we’ve been able to finish offensively, those things will take care of themselves.”"
Payton is right, speculation tends to run rampant with social media and lots of insiders trying to beat each in a race to put out information.
While the moves New Orleans has made this off-season could certainly make some think that they’re going in a different direction, Drew Brees will still be under center according to Sean Payton.
