Shaq believes the Warriors’ Stephen Curry is the NBA MVP in 2014-15.
With five players legitimately in contention for the 2014-15 NBA MVP award, everyone has an opinion of who should capture the award this season. Indiana Pacers general manager and Celtics legend Larry Bird seems to be in favor of Russell Westbrook.
Others have made arguments for James Harden, LeBron James and Anthony Davis. And then there’s the best player on the league’s best team, Stephen Curry. Count NBA great Shaquille O’Neal among those in his corner.

Despite being one of the best post players to ever play in the NBA, Shaq won only one MVP award–in the Los Angeles Lakers‘ amazing 1999-00 season (one of the best seasons any team has ever had).
But that should not make his opinion invalid. In fact, the fact Shaq won his MVP for such a dominant team might be an indicator of the way the MVP voting will end.
The Golden State Warriors already wrapped up the Pacific Division crown, and currently have a 58-13 record (.817 winning percentage). With 11 games remaining in the regular season, the Warriors have a chance to tie the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers and 1996-97 Chicago Bulls for the second most wins in NBA regular season history (69).
If the Warriors reach that, it would be nearly impossible to not reward Stephen Curry. Curry is seventh in the league in scoring, averaging 23.4 points per contest, despite playing for a very balanced team.
He’s also third in the league in steals per game, with 2.1, and sixth in assists per game, dishing out 7.9 dimes per game. He leads the league in free throw percentage (91.4) and is in the top-10 in 3-point percentage, hitting 42.4 percent of his shots from deep.
And he’s trying to become the rare player to go 40/50/90 (3-point/FG/FT). No guard has ever done that.
