The Dallas Cowboys didn’t win over any new fans when they signed Greg Hardy, but head coach Jason Garrett indicated the team will not hesitate to release him if they feel he’s not a fit.
After signing Greg Hardy this offseason to a deal that no one thought he deserved, the Dallas Cowboys have not won over many fans, which is hardly surprising. It was already hard to like the Cowboys, and their addition of Greg Hardy — a man with a vicious domestic violence past — does them no favors.
But as tone deaf s the signing seemed, head coach Jason Garrett wants to be the voice of reason in all of this and is trying to qualm concerns that fans have about Hardy getting a job again.
Hardy was charged with domestic violence in 2014 when he was accused of throwing his then-girlfriend on a bed full of guns and telling her they were all loaded. That chills to he bone, and Hardy’s reputation as a monster only grew from there. He sat out all but one game of the 2014 season, but the Cowboys have given him a second chance at a time many believe is far too soon.
Garrett spoke on the matter of Hardy being allowed to be paid to hit other human beings, and noted that the team is not at all hesitant to cut Hardy loose if they feel he’s not fitting in.
"“If at any point we don’t like what he’s doing as a player or a person, we can move on without any salary cap consequences.”"
This seems to help a little bit, but it still doesn’t make it alright that the Cowboys gave Hardy a contract. What he stands accused of his heinous and short of actually killing someone, Hardy’s reputation could not be any more worthless than it is right now.
The Cowboys have given themselves an out here by saying they’ll cut Hardy if they don’t like him — but they already gave him a contract so there’s really no going back from there.
