The San Francisco 49ers parted ways with offensive tackle Jonathan Martin.

Jim Harbaugh gave Jonathan Martin a second chance at his NFL career after his former player at Stanford was bullied by Richie Incognito with the Miami Dolphins, but now Martin is looking for a third chance after he was released on Thursday.

Martin appeared in 15 games last year for the 49ers and made nine starts, but he wasn’t very effective, nearly grading out as the worst starting offensive tackle in the NFL, according to ProFootballFocus.com‘s metrics who ranked him as the 60th best offensive tackle.

He was acquired for a late conditional draft pick after spending two seasons with Miami after they spend a second round pick on him out of Stanford where he started 37 games.

Meanwhile, the player who was responsible for the bulk of his bullying during his brief time in Miami, Richie Incognito, was picked up by the Buffalo Bills earlier this offseason to shore up their offensive line.

So you can scratch the Bills off the list of potential suitors for Martin as he looks to salvage his NFL career that looked so promising when he was coming out of Stanford but now looks to be nearing an end.

This is another example that if you can help a team win games your off-the-field behavior will be tolerated, but the moment you can’t help your team win, you’re out of a job. Martin couldn’t help the 49ers, but will he get a chance to help another team in the NFL or will the 25-year-old former second round pick be looking at an early forced retirement?
