The Buffalo Sabres lost in overtime against the Arizona Coyotes Thursday night and the Sabres fans were extremely happy about it.

The Buffalo Sabres are last in the Eastern Conference and in the NHL as a whole with just 48 points this season on a down year. The Arizona Coyotes are the next worst team in the NHL and last in the Western Conference with 54 points. The two teams met on Thursday night and when Buffalo lost in overtime, fans were happy because of the No. 1 overall draft pick.

The Sabres and Coyotes went to overtime tied at three and Sam Gagner scored 56 seconds into the overtime period to give Arizona the 4-3 win. After fans in Buffalo cheered on the goal, the team was confused and not too happy, especially defenseman Mike Weber:

“I’ve never been a part of that,” Weber said after the game according to ESPN. “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I guess. But this is a whole new low right now.”

“It’s tough to get momentum when your fans are rooting against you,” Weber said. “That’s the unfortunate part. I’ve never seen that before. I’ve always spoken extremely high of our fans. I don’t even know if disappointed is the word.

“They scored that first one, our fans are cheering. Delayed penalty, they cheer. They cheer when they score to win the game. I don’t know. I don’t even know what to say. It’s extremely frustrating for us.”

Ouch, Buffalo fans.

In the defense of the Sabres fans who just want the No. 1 overall pick, there’s some evidence that it could actually help your team. Some notable No. 1 picks over the years include Steven Stamkos, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, Marc-Andre Fleury, Rick Nash, Vincent Lecavalier, Joe Thorton, Mike Modano, Mario Lemieux and many more.

Hopefully this kind of behavior doesn’t continue in Buffalo and the fans get the hint that it just makes your team hate you.
