UNLV freshman guard Rashad Vaughn has decided to declare for the 2015 NBA Draft, according to a report from Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Wojnarowski says that Vaughn has plans to enter the draft and a formal declaration will be coming soon. It’s rare that Wojnarowski is wrong with a report, but it is worth noting that Vaughn Tweeted that he has not yet made a decision.
Vaughn averaged 17.8 points per game and 4,8 rebounds last season with the Running Rebels in 22 games. He missed the final three weeks of the season with a meniscus injury in his left knee.
The 6-6, 210 pound guard is currently projected as a mid-second round pick. Vaughn has an intriguing skill set and could move up towards the first round with strong pre-draft workouts and better health.
With great size and length for his position, Vaughn has the physical tools to compete in the NBA and could work out as a project pick. Vaughn also displayed the ability to shoot from NBA range during his freshman season and hit 38.1 percent from three, but NBA teams will want him to improve on shot selection and cut down on turnovers.
Overall, Vaughn could benefit greatly from one more year of development college to go with his great physical skills, but re-injuring the meniscus in his knee has to be a factor in his decision.
Vaughn should be ranked comfortably as one of the top 10 shooting guards in the 2015 draft. D’Angelo Russell, Mario Hezonja, Devin Booker and Caris LeVert are the clear class of the position, but Vaughn has the potential to slide into the group behind them.
UNLV will miss its leading scorer greatly next season if he leaves. The Running Rebels finished a disappointing 18-15 and missed the tournament for the first time since 2009 despite having some NBA prospects in Vaughn and Christian Wood.
