The Cleveland Indians made waves on social media by doing their own personal take on Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets”.

Twitter has allowed fans to get more personal with professional athletes than ever before, and are never shy from voicing their displeasures from behind a keyboard. This week the Cleveland Indians took a page out of late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s playbook by having players read some of the harshest tweets about the on camera, and the result is hilarious.

Some tweets are complimentary, perhaps someone wishing your favorite player a happy birthday or to get well from an injury. Very often, however, they have humorous and sometimes downright mean intentions.

The idea comes from Kimmel’s popular segment “Mean Tweets”, in which celebrities are forced to read out loud what their haters have to say about them.

Among the harshest tweets read include someone kindly requesting for second baseman Jason Kipnis to “stop eating and start hitting”. Kipnis responded by pondering “why not both?”, while taking a bite from a cheeseburger already on-hand.

Another advised All-Star catcher Carlos Santana that he should probably stick to playing guitar. Of course he had no choice to break out a fantastic rendition of the Latin-music legend Carlos Santana’s “Maria Maria”.

It is great to see the Indians organization having some fun with their critics, and their decision to make this humorous, self-deprecating video will surely win over some of the haters on social media.
