The Final Four has a familiar flavor this year, much like a football playoffs with the Patriots, Steelers, Packers and Seahawks. All of the teams in the last stages of the dance this year are teams that have been in there recently and two of the four have even won championships. Three out of four are number one seeds and most everyone expected them to make it to this point. There was a momentary underdog flavor when people hopped aboard the Gonzaga train, but after the Zags were soundly defeated by Duke last night, the Final Four fell into familiar place.
Kentucky is the team that stands out the most, continuing their reign of excellence in their fourth Final Four in five years. Wisconsin is on a return trip as well, even beating the same team to get there in Arizona. Duke hasn’t been in since 2010, but they’ve been in the mix for the last 15 years, so it’s hardly surprising to see them there again. Michigan State is the only team that isn’t seeded at number one, but they’ve been in the tournament with regularity.
The only thing new about the teams in the Final Four are the players, which is a given, considering the turnaround in college sports. For Kentucky, the team everyone’s watching, only the Harrison twins have been in the championship before. Alongside them are four freshman and a junior, giving the favorite team a face of inexperience.
Most expect the winner of the Kentucky/Wisconsin game to produce the ultimate winner, and that’s a fair shake. However, if Duke wins their game, whoever plays them should watch out. They crushed Gonzaga and have won 19 of their last 21, losing only to Notre Dame both times and obviously Notre Dame is out of it. They could be a force.
