Midway through the first period, Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz went to scoop up a puck along the boards behind his own net, with Anaheim skaters trailing close behind.
Unfortunately for Schultz, he whiffed on the puck.
Not only did he whiff, Anaheim winger Jakob Silfverberg was there to corral the loose puck where he flipped it to center Nate Thompson, who slapped it in for the score.
It was another mistake in a long list of errors for the young Oilers.
While the team has lots of young talent, it continues to struggle and has yet to take the next step. The Ducks on the other hand, are looking to make a push for the Stanley Cup after falling in the Western Conference Semifinals last season.
Young players make mistakes, but whiffing on a puck in your own zone with trailing defenders has to be one that needs to be avoided.
Unfortunately for Edmonton, the Ducks were there to capitalize on their mistake.
