The most rad manager in Major League Baseball only keeps growing in his level of awesomeness. First-year Cubs manager Joe Maddon, 61, is basically baseball’s version of Pete Carroll–a coach who interacts with his players like he’s one of them, yet also brings superior teaching and strategical prowess.
Monday, he did something quite similar to that which football teams during practices–blared music loudly. But that’s not really a thing in baseball, especially during Spring Training, where fields are reminiscent of those kids play on as children. In other words, they are not situated within the same giant stadiums they play in during the regular season.
And so no loud speakers and sound system. His prescription was to bring in a DJ to do the trick.
Unfortunately it came the same day that Theo Epstein and his front office made the decision to send Javy Baez and Kris Bryant down to the minor league camp. They didn’t get to work out in the concert-like atmosphere.
But they’ll be back soon enough. They will eventually be the bedrock of Maddon’s fun teams who finally make the Cubs respectable again. Maddon has a track record as a winner. As the Rays’ manager from 2006-14, he went 754-705 (.517) with a small payroll.
The Cubs, with Epstein and Maddon, will play large market “moneyball,” which should add to their ability to win games.
