Motley Crüe frontman Vince Neil butchers the National Anthem (Video)

Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil may not have been the best choice for the national anthem at this USFL game

The American National Anthem is a longstanding tradition, a symbol of all that is great about the United States.

It’s also not an easy song to sing. It requires a more than capable vocalist to handle all the vocal twists and turns the song provides.

Keep in mind that it should be someone who can honor America, and also someone capable of hitting each and every note of the song. Let’s say you made a list of everyone who fit those qualifications. Where would Vince Neil, frontman of the ’80s hair metal band Motley Crue, rank on the list?

Apparently if you’re the Las Vegas Outlaws, the USFL’s newest franchise, Neil is number one on that list. The Outlaws enlisted Neil to perform the National Anthem at their inaugural game, and it went, well, about how you’d expect. Maybe a little worse.

Vince Neil comes out with a cheerleader on each arm (who would expect anything less from the writer behind “Girls, Girls Girls”)?

Of course, as the esteemed singer of Motley Crue, one would expect nothing but a Juliard-caliber vocal performance from Neil… or maybe you expected something more befitting an ’80s metal singer. Whatever your expectations, chances are Neil failed to live up to them with his National Anthem, which showcased all the vocal talent of an especially drunk four-year-old, as well as some gaps in his memory as far as the lyrics go. The video can be watched in its full glory below (skip to the 4:55 mark):

That’s not quite Roseanne Barr bad, but it’s pretty bad.

In the video, you get a nice contrast between the solemn uniformed soldiers holding up the American flag, and the ridiculous hair metal frontman. That’s some Mad Men-level symbolism right there… or it would be, except it’s not on purpose, and it has no higher meaning other than “Vince Neil is ridiculous.”
