Did UConn women’s basketball coach  Geno Auriemma really call men’s basketball a joke?

Geno Auriemma thinks that NCAA men’s basketball is a joke. Who is he to say such a thing? Well, he’s the University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball coach and has been for the past 30 years. He’s led the huskies to 915 wins and nine championships since taking the head coaching position in 1985. Don’t you remember? His team brought home the matching half of the hardware to UConn when they won the women’s tournament last year.

Auriemma’s team is back in the Final Four again this season and shared his thoughts on men’s basketball at a teleconference on Wednesday. “There’s only like 10 teams, you know, out of 25, that actually play the kind of game of basketball that you’d like to watch. Every coach will tell you that there’s 90 million reasons for it,” he said. Auriemma argued that the lack of scoring is part of the problem. In this year’s tournament, the men are averaging 67.8 points per game, just a few ahead of the women who are averaging 69.5 per game.

When addressing the men specifically he said, “We’re fighting for the entertainment dollar, here, and I have to tell you it’s not entertainment from a fan’s standpoint.”
