Report: Shaka Smart accepts Texas Longhorns head coaching position
By Jack Crosby
Someone was finally able to pry away Shaka Smart from VCU and it’s none other than the Texas Longhorns
Well the search for a new men’s head basketball coach for the Texas Longhorns has come to a close, and what a splash the school in Austin has made as reports are beginning to come out that the school has hired VCU head coach Shaka Smart, one of the more successful coach of the past few seasons in the game.
On Thursday Texas athletic director Steve Patterson flew to Virginia to meet with Smart, and given the news that’s beginning to come out now, it would appear that everything went pretty well with the meeting and an agreement was eventually met.
Shaka Smart began his journey as the head coach of VCU back in 2009, and it has been virtually nothing but success ever since then. He’s compiled himself a career record of 163-56 and has guided the team to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Of course, the tournament run that everyone will remember came back in 2011 when he was able to lead his team to the Final Four, a place that no one thought VCU would ever see.
This past Sunday the school announced that it had parted ways with Rick Barnes after 17 seasons at the helm. When the move was made, the writing was on the wall that there was some fresh blood on the way to help reinvigorate the program. And quite frankly, Texas picked the right person in Shaka Smart.
