The San Francisco Giants extended the current contracts of manager Bruce Bochy and general manager Brian Sabean on Friday.

The San Francisco Giants have become a mini-dynasty, or a full-on dynasty depending how you look at it. Three World Series championships in five years, a dynasty of some sort it most definitely is.

And now the architect of that roster, and the man who has wielded the desired results, have earned contract extensions. Friday the San Francisco Giants extended the current contracts of general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy until 2019, as reported by MLB.com’s Chad Thornburg.

“Brian and Bruce form the foundation on which all three championship teams have been built,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer. “The strength and stability of Giants baseball is a direct reflection of the strength and stability of the partnership of these two men. My top priority this offseason was to ensure that this partnership and our outstanding baseball organization remain intact for years to come.”

Baer’s words are unquestionable. Though the Giants are middling in terms of their use in sabermetrics, which has taken baseball by storm, they’ve managed to put together rosters which succeed when it matters most, in the postseason.

They have, however, struggled a bit during the regular season. Though they won the National League West in both of their first two World Series titles, they did not a season ago–instead claiming the second Wild Card.

In the off years–2011 and 2013–the team finished third in the NL West and failed to make the playoffs. That fact may be why some question the validity of calling the Giants a dynasty.

But championships remain the lone title that matters in all of sport, baseball or otherwise. The Giants have embraced an all-in attitude. It’s been good enough to earn them the title of “best in baseball” three times.

They’ve done it similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers of the NFL by mostly avoiding free agency, instead opting to acquire and develop talent primarily through the MLB entry draft and through intelligent in-season trades and acquisitions.

The Giants have won mostly with pitching and defense in the era of pitching and defense.

For that reason, Sabean was also promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations–a title largely used to justify the extension and raise in salary.

Sabean’s grasp includes all baseball operations, from the major league organization as well as oversight of the minor league farm teams.

Bochy is 667-629 in nine seasons with the Giants after coming from the San Diego Padres where he manned the same post for 12 seasons in which he took the Padres to one of just two World Series in their franchise history.
