Toronto Blue Jays rookie Devon Travis hit a home run in his first major league game against the Yankees.

Playing in his first major league game, Devon Travis showed few nerves. In fact, he did something few big leaguers do: hit a home run in his inaugural game.

With the Toronto Blue Jays already nursing a 5-1 lead on the road against the storied New York Yankees in the Bronx, Travis took a 1-1 pitch against Yankees left handed reliever Chasen Shreve and blasted it well beyond the left field fence.

Travis came into the big leagues known as a player who could really hit the ball. In three minor league seasons, the second baseman hit .323, got on base .388 percent of the time and slugged an impressive .487 for his career.

He impressed in Spring Training with his bat, hitting .359/.400/.453 in camp and earned the Opening Day start as a result. He only hit 29 home runs in 1,124 plate appearance over those three minor league seasons, but his slugging percentage proves he can drive the ball.

He showed great power on the Opening Day drive, as that blast would have left almost every yard in the league. That’ll make Travis more than comfortable in the friendly hitting environment of Rogers Centre as well.

Travis also walked twice on Monday, making it quite the impressive debut for the 24-year-old rookie.
