The Cleveland Indians are holding a scavenger hunt around the city with the reward of gift bags for successful seekers.

Within the realm of professional sports giveaways, it does not get more creative, or stranger than this. The Cleveland Indians are stoked about their 2015 Major League Baseball campaign. They want you, the fans, to be as well. That is why the franchise will be hiding several gift bags around the city, while providing clues on the team’s official Twitter page.

The club’s home opener is currently scheduled for Friday. To add extra incentive for this search, the franchise will provide a 1-in-12 chance of receiving tickets to the game.

The Indians scoped out several notable locations around town. As if the search would not have been easy enough for native Cleveland residents, the clues contained visuals of the spots in question.

Our guess is that the additional aid is likely due to time constraints. After all, the organization needs to have all of the winning entries likely in by Thursday in order to reward their fans with tickets in a timely manner.

Still, one has to imagine it would have been better if it was an offer for a select series at a later date, or an all star game fan package; the 2015 edition takes place in another Ohio city, Cincinnati.

How funny would it have been to have fans desperately turning over every square inch of the city for weeks, possibly months, looking for the obscure hiding places team officials could devise.

All kidding aside, the promotional tactic actually seems kind of brilliant in retrospect. It feels very reminiscent of geocaching.

If this is the future of promotional giveaways, consider us on board. Now all the Indians need to do is end that World Series drought, and Cleveland might actually leave behind the notion of being the nation’s second most depressing sports town.

Sorry, Buffalo, there does not seem to be much hope for you in that department.
