Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari jokes about being booed
2015 AP Coach of the Year and 2015 Hall of Fame inductee John Calipari was booed by fans after being announced at the National Championship game Monday night, but he joked about it on Twitter afterward.
John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats had a great season after going 38-0 and making the Final Four, but lost to Wisconsin in the national semi-final. Calipari was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame and announced alongside the other inductees at the National Championship game Monday night but was harshly booed.
After that episode of booing, Calipari took to Twitter to play his typical schtick.
It was a good brush off for Calipari, who has made it clear in his impressive coaching career that he doesn’t care about naysayers whatsoever. For those who don’t get the reference, Louie Dampier was a two-time All-American at Kentucky and then a seven-time All-Star selection in the ABA with the Kentucky Colonels.
Calipari has faced tough criticism throughout his career after academic fraud violations at Memphis with point guard Derrick Rose. He also has been the recipient of some criticism because of his stellar recruiting, which leaves many college basketball fans and personalities to speculate the way Calipari is able to get so many great recruits.
With all of that and losing in a Final Four that Calipari’s Kentucky team was favored to win, Calipari faced a tough crowd Monday night despite accomplishing a great milestone in his career of being inducted into the Hall of Fame and being named the 2015 AP Coach of the Year.
Calipari has been a dominant recruiter in college basketball, nabbing two No. 1 overall prospects in his time at Kentucky as well as 14 top-15 recruits since 2011.
The Kentucky Wildcats have been to three Final Fours with Calipari and won a National Championship back in 2011, led by Anthony Davis. Calipari no doubt has the secret for recruiting and building great teams that mold prime NBA stars and is much deserving of his induction to the Hall of Fame, but the speculation of how he’s been able to do all of this will always be there from fans.
