Bo Ryan isn’t a big fan of the ‘one-and-done’ system of college basketball.

Wisconsin Badgers’ head coach Bo Ryan has always been free to speak his mind and his players have been the same way. After a hard fought 2015 National Championship performance, the outspoken coach made a sneaky jab at the way college basketball has been in recent years.

Talking about the game and development of his players at the postgame presser, Ryan said, “All the seniors that I’ve had — hard to say the word. But every player that’s played through the program, OK, we don’t do a rent-a-player. You know what I mean? Try to take a fifth-year guy. That’s OK. If other people do that, that’s OK. I like trying to build from within. It’s just the way I am. And to see these guys grow over the years and to be here last year and lose a tough game, boom, they came back.”

It wasn’t just comments about the ‘one-and-done’ college basketball player that landed Ryan in some hot water, it was his harsh criticism of the referees.

In Ryan’s defense, which many people haven’t been, the veteran coach was robbed on multiple occasions with terrible officiating. One instance was a clear out of bounds call that was missed as Duke’s Justise Winslow‘s fingertips grazed the orange as it was heading out of play. The referees even reviewed it, saw the same replay that was shown on national TV and still upheld the ruling of Duke ball.

Ryan had beef and so did Wisconsin Badger fans everywhere watching the replay as their hearts broke in turmoil.

Back to the snide “rent-a-player” comment, it was a little out of line, but the coach just got done getting his heart ripped out and stomped on with a national title loss. It’s hard to speak as an unbiased person in a time like that where he felt as if his team was slighted.

No, the ‘one-and-done’ system is not perfect. Actually, it’s far from perfect. However, the coach should know the right time and place to make those comments. A handful of Duke players, who just outplayed his Badgers, are freshmen who will likely be making the jump to the NBA this year.

I think we all know that Ryan’s development over ‘one-and-done’ recruiting will never change.
