The Chicago White Sox center fielder channeled Jim Edmonds on a great diving catch Thursday afternoon.

More from Chicago White Sox

The Major League Baseball season is less than a week old, but there is already a strong contender for catch of the year.

Chicago White Sox center Adam Eaton absolutely robbed Mike Moustakas with a sprawling catch in the fifth inning of Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The video from the Twitter account of MLB:

Mercy indeed, Hawk.

Eaton didn’t break wrong or get a bad jump on the ball either, as he had to sprint a long way before the full extension. Moustakas was denied an RBI with Paulo Orlando on third base, although the Royals would go on to win the game 4-1 and complete a three-game sweep of Chicago.

The 26-year-old is out to prove the White Sox were justified in giving him a 5-year, $23.5 million extension last month. While Eaton isn’t a star, he looks like a solid piece on a team that is just about ready to contend.

Eaton hit .300/.362/.401 last season, his first in Chicago. He also made a number of highlight reel plays in center such as this one, grading out as a plus defensive player overall.

Of course, the White Sox don’t want to see him having to make too many plays like this. Eaton missed a game last season after colliding with the outfield wall while sprinting at full speed and was fortunate that he didn’t suffer a major injury.

Eaton may be forced to cover a lot of ground in the outfield this season. Melky Cabrera is average at best in left field (although he is upgrade from Dayan Viciedo last season) and Avisail Garcia’s defense in right needs a lot of work.
