Blue Jays’ Kevin Pillar makes wall-crashing catch
By CM Towle
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar made a crashing-into-the-wall catch against the Orioles on Friday.
Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar spared nothing to get a towering Chris Davis hit on Friday. The ball was on its way out over the wall in center-left in the bottom of the sixth before Pillar came sailing over to make the catch. He made it, but he crashed into the wall, bounced off and ended up in the dirt. But he made the catch and the Orioles’ Davis was out, adding insult to injury in an 11-2 drubbing at the time of the catch.
The Blue Jays proceeded to decimate the Orioles in a 12-5 final, giving Toronto pitcher Mark Buehrle his 200th career win and handing O’s pitcher Bud Norris his first loss on the MLB season. Norris was clearly the problem from the very beginning. He immediately allowed a single to Jose Reyes and then followed it up with a Pompey double. Then Bautista singled and Reyes scored. Encarnación came up next and got Pompey in. Norris wasn’t done causing damage though, he then walked Donaldson, which allowed Navarro to come up and hit a double, batting both Bautista and Donaldson in. Norris somehow managed to get the last two outs, but it was mostly because the very bottom of the Jays order was up, including Justin Smoak and Kevin Pillar.

So the O’s were in a 4-0 hole before they even got a chance to bat. It wasn’t all horrible for the O’s though. Adam Jones hit a home run and had a career-tying four hits while batting in two runs for Baltimore. The final tally of 12 runs was the most ever allowed at home by the O’s, way back in 1988.
Norris continued to be awful however. He had a clean second inning, but backed into problems in the third and then in the fourth, all of the you-know-what hit the fan about as hard as Pillar hit the outfield wall. He gave up five more runs before finally getting out of the inning. He was pulled in the fifth in favor of Brad Brach, who allowed two hits, but no more runs.
Reliever Jason Garcia took Brach’s place in the sixth and he gave up another run, but then had a clean seventh and most of the eighth. Wesley Wright closed the debacle out and just couldn’t help one more run in the ninth to bring the O’s runs-allowed total to 12. Orioles fans probably can’t wait to forget this one.
