The Dallas Cowboys like Melvin Gordon and could trade up in the NFL Draft to make sure they get the Heisman runner-up from Wisconsin.

DeMarco Murray left the Dallas Cowboys in free agency after leading the NFL in rushing and left a sizable void in the offense of the reigning NFC East champions, but the team has identified the player they want to fill his shoes.

This year’s draft class is loaded with running back talent and the Cowboys have their eyes set on Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon in the first round.

Dallas picks at No. 27 but could trade up in the first round, according to Tony Pauline to get Gordon who rushed for 2,587 yards, the second most yards in FBS history, and was the runner-up to Marcus Mariota for the Heisman Trophy. He also led the nation with 29 rushing touchdowns and set the FBS record (since broken) with 408 rushing yards in the win against Nebraska.

Gordon has drawn comparisons to former rushing champion, Jamaal Charles with his ability to hit the home run and turn a four-yard run into a 60-yard touchdown. The 6-1, 213-pound Gordon would seem to be an ideal fit in the Cowboys offense that features the best offensive line in the NFL and helped pave the way for Murray to lead the NFL in carries, yards, touchdowns, yards per game and yards from scrimmage in 2014.

Despite only one running back drafted in the top-25 picks over the last four years, this year’s class could see two with Gordon and Georgia’s Todd Gurley likely to hear their name called in the first 25 picks.

So how high would Dallas have to move up in the first round to get Gordon?

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 24 pick and the Baltimore Ravens own the No. 26 pick and both could make a running back their first pick. Gurley could be the pick of the Cardinals if he is on the board, which is a possibility considering he’s recovering from an ACL tear that ended his season in November, but he could also potentially be gone at No. 8 to Atlanta.

If Gurley goes inside the top-10 that would mean Dallas has to at least trade up to No. 23 where the Detroit Lions are scheduled to pick.

The starting price would be the No. 27 pick and the No. 60 selection to move up four spots. That price is likely not enough to scare off Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. If you’re the Cowboys do you move up at all costs to get Gordon or do you stay at No. 27 and hope he falls to you?
