Ringo Starr: I was drunk for decades after The Beatles
By Tony Tran
Musician Ringo Starr recently told reporters that he had a bit of a drinking problem after The Beatles broke up.
When you’re bigger than Jesus, you’re gonna have some big problems.

Such was the case with Ringo Starr, who was apparently so distraught with the break up of one of the most influential bands in the history of music that he fell into a very long problem with alcoholism.
Speaking to reporters in London, he said that he actually couldn’t even recall entire years after the breakup due to his drinking problem.
From the NY Daily News:
"“I was mad,” the 74-year-old told the paper. “For 20 years. I had breaks in between of not being.”“I was drunk,” he admitted. “I didn’t notice … some of those years are absolutely gone.”"
This led to some very serious issues in his life (obviously) and culminated in him entering rehab with his wife, Barbara Bach, in 1988. Still though, his alcoholism was so bad that he couldn’t remember parts of entire decades, let alone years.
Somehow during this time, he was able to still bring himself to work and make public appearances. Many children of the 70s and 80s, and even the 90s, will recall him narrating the Thomas & Friends series and he even played the conductor on the show’s U.S. spinoff, Shining Time Station.
You read that right. The dude who might have been narrating your childhood on PBS or videotape was probably saying it in between swigs of his flask.
Starr now says that he lives a healthier lifestyle than he did before, even taking on a vegetarian diet like his buddy Paul.
"“I do live healthily,” Starr said. “I’m a vegetarian and I eat a lot of kale and broccoli. And a lot of berries. It works for me.”"
Whatever works for you, Ringo.
All this talk of hard drinking and recklessness makes sense though. After all, the other Beatles were afraid of him …
