Fantasy Basketball Awards: Is Russell Westbrook Our Fantasy MVP?
By Dave Fuqua
Is Russell Westbrook our Fantasy MVP?
Well the time has finally came. There is still plenty of debate about who will be the NBA MVP and there is similar debate about who should be fantasy basketball’s MVP. If we were judging solely on games after the All-Star break I think this might be a different story, but the fact is that this award is going to be based on the entire NBA season.

In case you have not heard me mention this or read an article I did prior to starting this series of fantasy basketball awards, I think the race for Fantasy MVP is down to Russell Westbrook and Stephen Curry. This will be our final fantasy basketball award of the 2014-2015 season, but we will continue to provide you with informative posts about next year’s player values and information to make you a better fantasy basketball player.

Most Improved Player and Sixth Man Award
Now that we have taken care of the early business, let us get down to the discussion at hand. If you stopped and read the article that I posted before starting this series, then my hand has probably already been tipped and you realize I am holding pocket aces. Let us for a minute pretend that that article does not exist and try to take a more open look at this.
Only a blind man can deny what Russell Westbrook has done over the second half and maybe even more specifically the last third of the season. He has been absolutely on fire. he has posted more triple-doubles than a show dog could jump over. I realize that what he has done has likely somewhat kept the Thunder in the hunt for the final playoff spot, but Westbrook has been on the court for 66 of 82 games as of the writing of this article. You could argue and make cases for both players but could you imagine for a moment would the Warriors be in the position that they are in without Stephen Curry? If you take Westbrook off of the Thunder and you have a normally healthy Kevin Durant, the argument could be made that they are a fairly similar team as to what they are right now.
If you take Stephen Curry off of the Warriors I don’t think that they would even be near the caliber of team that they are now. I would think that they might even garner the worse record in the Western Conference without Curry. I realize that they would still have a decent lineup without him, but there is no chance they are even close to what they are with him.
Another thing to look at, is that you could say that Westbrook has had 66 games to get the Thunder in the playoffs and if the season ended today he would have failed at that job. When I looked at my leagues I found Curry and Westbrook both on an equal number of championship teams and sadly enough one of the championship teams owned both Curry and Westbrook.
Maybe I am just biased, but I prefer Curry to Westbrook as both the NBA and Fantasy MVP award. I think Curry has done it all year and has easily had more success than Westbrook and so with that in mind it is my good pleasure to hand out the 2014-2015 Fantasy MVP Award to none other than Stephen Curry.

Congratulations to Stephen Curry and if the Bulls don’t win it all this year I am rooting for you sir. Good luck!
