Female Golfer calls for Women’s Masters at Augusta

LPGA golfer Paula Creamer has urged the powers to be to set up a women’s Masters only days after the Men’s competition finished up at Augusta

The sport of Golf has often being criticized for not promoting the Womens’ end of the game, something which in this day and age seems incredibly unjust. One of the more popular women from on the LPGA circuit has come out on social media to raise the point of a female Masters taking place.

This is more than a reasonable hope from the golfer, to think that there is still a ‘boys club’ in existence in professional sport is absolutely astounding. How can there be any level of discrimination taking place at the highest level of sports in the year 2015?

The 2015 Masters tournament concluded on Sunday with youngster Jordan Spieth running the show with a wire to wire victory. The Masters is the tournament that catches the imagination of the world, even those of us who aren’t always enamored with the sport. So to think that the biggest draw in the sport of golf would have a tournament for ladies in addition to gentleman.

Maybe I’m thinking far too progressive for a club that only allowed their first female members (2) back in 2012, (92 years after women were given the right to vote in this country). How this is even an issue is beyond me. The Augusta golf course is very exclusive and that’s fine and well within their rights until it enters the territory of discrimination or sexism.

Obviously men’s golf is more popular than women’s right now, but how will the LPGA ever grow to the same heights as the PGA if they can’t have tournaments of similar stature. There’s no doubt that women’s golf would greatly benefit from having an annual tournament played at Augusta. It would promote the sport while bettering the image of the exclusive club.

Augusta chair Billy Payne was quoted as saying they have no intention of hosting another tournament there because of time restraints and the efforts that goes in to hosting such a tournament as the men’s tournament.

"“The time that we dedicate to the preparation and conduct of the tournament is already extensive. I don’t think that we would ever host another tournament here.” – Billy Payne"

You can definitely understand what goes in to hosting the Masters each year, but the benefits of hosting a women’s Masters would far outshine the negatives and effort required in my humble opinion.
