This will be the New England Patriots first visit to the White House during the Obama administration and Revis’ first visit overall.
Revis had a large hand in the Patriots’ success this season as one of the leagues greatest shut-down corners. Defensive mastermind Bill Belichick was able to utilize Revis’ talents during the regular season on the way to his fourth NFL championship as head coach. Revis totaled 47 combined tackles, one forced fumble, and two interceptions for the Patriots over this past regular season.
Revis’ contract, however, was not to the Pats’ liking as they chose not to pick up his second-year option that came with a large $20 million cap hit. The Patriots instead offered Revis a contract that reportedly came with $30 million guaranteed. Revis ultimately signed with the New York Jets this offseason at $39 million guaranteed.
Going for the money has been Revis history as he took a large payout from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two years ago, and now has left the perennial playoff competitor Patriots for more money with the Jets.
The Jets contract that Revis ultimately accepted is at five years and is worth $70 million.
With his contract situation now set, Revis accompanying the Patriots on their trip is no surprise as there seems to be no hard feelings between Revis and his former team, and opportunities to meet the President of the United States are usually few and far between.
