Fantasy Baseball: What Happens With Yasmany Tomas Called Up?
By Mike Marteny
The Arizona Diamondbacks called up the first big-name prospect of the 2015 season on Wednesday when they recalled Yasmany Tomas from AAA Reno. Tomas had a homer in 21 at bats at AAA, but he was mainly down there to work on his defense. The bat will come around.

The Aces were playing Tomas in left field only, not at third base. If he gains eligibility at third base as the right handed half of Jake Lamb‘s platoon, he could be a more appealing target.
Arizona invested heavily in Tomas in the offseason, so they felt like they had to bring him up. What will this mean for other fantasy players on the Diamondbacks? Let’s take a look.

Call to the Pen
Mark Trumbo isn’t going anywhere in right. The Diamondbacks lack run producers, so Trumbo’s bat has to stay in the lineup. It won’t matter how much he struggles.
A.J. Pollock‘s early season struggles have resulted in more at bats for Ender Inciarte. Inciarte is hitting .393 with six runs scored and six RBI so far this year. You would think that any playing time for Tomas would come at the expense of Pollock (.250, four RBI, five runs) and David Peralta (.211, one homer, three RBI, three runs scored).
It is more likely that Tomas will be exclusively used as a pinch hitter and the other part of the platoon at third base. Chris Owings (.087, two RBI, two runs) has been awful, so he is the most likely to lose at bats.
The part-time player that Tomas will be means that he is only worth a look in deep leagues. He has a lot of potential, but he won’t see consistent at bats anywhere in Arizona without an inury. That is, unless he tears the cover off the ball. That seems unlikely considering he was hitting only .190 at AAA. It will more likely take him a bit to get going. If you held him in any leagues waiting for the call-up, you may as well hang on a bit longer to see if he does get consistent time. It is more likely that he won’t be relevant in fantasy until later in the season, if then.
That leaves him as waiver fodder in redraft leagues. If you have an open bench slot in keeper or dynasty leagues, he could be worth a look for long term potential.
