After winning the Masters only a week ago, Jordan Spieth is already back in action for the RBC Heritage at the Harbour Town Golf Link in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In the first round, Spieth shot a 3-over 74 and wasn’t in contention at all. It was a terrible round, but nobody was going to blame a 21-year-old for playing poorly just a week off the biggest moment of his life. Well, something must have happened after that round, because Spieth came out today like a madman.
Russell Knox had the best round of the day at 6-under, but Spieth destroyed that round by shooting 9-under himself. It was as perfect of a round as anyone could ask for: nine pars and nine birdies. The round made him 6-under for the tournament which is good enough to have him tied for fourth and only two strokes off the lead. The 62 for the day moved him up 89 spots from yesterday.
Spieth is the type of player to catch fire and hold it for the rest of a tournament – as seen at the Masters – so it will be interesting to see if he can come through a couple more times to win this tournament. If he does win this weekend, he will join Bernhard Langer as the only players to ever win the Masters and RBC Heritage in the same year. That’s not some historic record that will always be talked about, but it’s very cool nonetheless.
Coming into this tournament, Spieth had placed first, second, second, first in his last four outings. It would be pretty spectacular if he could add another win to that streak. Heck, just another top five outing would be good enough to turn heads. Besides the current streak Spieth is on, he also has another win and top five finish on the season.
Spieth is currently the second ranked golfer in the world behind Rory McIlroy, but that could change if the 21-year-old keeps up this crazy pace.
A win at the Masters is usually the biggest victory for most golfers in their life, and it is definitely the biggest win of Jordan Spieth’s young career. That was only a week ago, and that’s why Spieth’s round today was so impressive. There’s no time to think about the last tournament, it’s always about moving ahead.
