The Packers are no stranger to Thanksgiving games, but it’s usually as the road team–they are the most frequent Thanksgiving opponents for the Detroit Lions, one of the NFL’s two fixtures of the holiday, along with the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers have played the Lions on Thanksgiving 21 times, including four in the last eight years.
The Bears played the Lions last year on Thanksgiving Day, losing 38-14.
NFL schedules are available tonight at 8 p.m. eastern time, and so far this is the only bit of news that has leaked ahead of the official announcement.
The Packers are coming off a successful season that saw them advance to the NFC Championship game, stormed to a 19-7 lead, only to lose 28-22 in overtime thanks to some questionable coaching decisions, some bad luck, and a dropped onside kick.
Most of the core of the Packers return for 2015, as the team looks to continue their run of NFC dominance. They have become one of the league’s most successful teams, missing the postseason just three times in the past 15 years. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have All-World quarterback Aaron Rodgers on your side.
The Bears, meanwhile, are coming off a horrendous year that saw them answer playoff expectations with a dismal 5-11 season. The Bears’ 2014 featured the firing of coach Marc Trestman and the benching of quarterback (and hate magnet) Jay Cutler. The Bears now have a new coach, John Fox, and GM, Ryan Pace. It appears (barring any surprise trades) that they will be soldiering on with Cutler in 2015, though they shipped out his favorite target, Brandon Marshall.
This is one of the NFL’s flagship rivalries, and this will be the first time it has taken place on Thanksgiving. Last year’s Bears-Packers games were huge blowouts, but hopefully that trend won’t continue, and we can get some memorable football on this most American of holidays.
