Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy was reportedly involved in a verbal altercation with teammate Davon Coleman on Friday.

Signed in the recent NFL offseason despite his rather dubious off-field past, Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy was suspended for 10 games without pay earlier in the week. That’s a pretty solid blow that you would think might encourage Hardy to keep his nose clean, but nope, instead he’s now reportedly having verbal altercations with teammates, according to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports. The problem came during conditioning drills and escalated to the point where teammates had to separate Hardy and Coleman.

According to Pro Football Talk, the reason for the altercation was Coleman calling Hardy a “woman beater” when Hardy challenged Coleman’s efforts during the drill. Hardy was probably incensed by the stinging accuracy of the comment. Hopefully Hardy knows that Coleman’s use of facts as an insult isn’t going to be contained to him, however. Imagine if other teams know they can get under his skin that easily during a game. That is, the next time he plays a game.

In all seriousness, Hardy is appealing the suspension handed down by the NFL, but if he doesn’t win, he won’t be eligible to take the field until the Week 12 matchup with his former team, the Panthers. The league went through a two-month investigation into the domestic violence accusations leveled at Hardy and came to the conclusion that there was enough evidence pointing to Hardy’s violation of the league’s policies.

Even though the Cowboys built some protections into Hardy’s contract and were expecting up to a six-game suspension, you have to wonder if they’re having any regrets about signing Hardy, especially considering Hardy’s apparent inability to control his temper. Furthermore, it probably doesn’t help Hardy’s image in trying to appeal the suspension either.

As for Davon Coleman, he’s an undrafted rookie who made the team and started the season only to have it eventually derailed by injuries. Now obviously the Cowboys have far more invested in Hardy than in Coleman, so if the bad feelings continue, it will be interesting to see if any sides are taken.

On the other hand, fan opinions are coming down solidly in favor of Coleman, with comments largely pointing out that the insult directed at Hardy was, at the very least, true.
