We all knew Josh Smith of the Houston Rockets was a bit of a doozy, possibly in more ways than one. But he’s a professional athlete, so we assumed one way wouldn’t be staying on his feet on a defensive possession.

He proved us wrong on Friday night as the Rockets battled the in-state rival Dallas Mavericks in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.

What may be the most hilarious part of Smith’s fall–beyond the simple fact that he was not touched or screened by any offensive player or teammate–is that he wasn’t privy to a screen.

He was on the help side of the pick-and-roll; he was the help defender. Help defenders should not have any problem whatsoever staying on their feet as the ballhander attacks him, especially on a side pick-and-roll such as this one where Monta Ellis isn’t even trying to attack him.

Smith, acquired at midseason by the Rockets’ quirky general manager Daryl Morey after being released by the Detroit Pistons of all teams, has had a bit of a resurgence upon his arrival into an important role in Houston.

But this play recalls to mind that Smith can still be a bit of a bonehead from time-to-time.
