Tiger Woods announces he will play in Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass
By Andrew Ross
Tiger Woods is still looking to get his first win of the season. He’ll resume that search at the TPC – Sawgrass.
We haven’t heard much of anything from Tiger Woods since he finished 17th at the Masters, but he has finally broken his silence.
While promoting the game of golf with Nike in Shanghai, Woods took to Twitter to share where he will be playing next. Luckily for us, it’s soon.
The Players Championship will be played in two weeks at the beautiful TPC Sawgrass as it always is. Tiger’s golf image might not be that high for a lot of people right now, but he has a lot going for him that should make people optimistic.
For starters, Woods won this tournament the last time he played in 2013 (as he brings up in his tweet). In that win, Woods finished 13-under (started the tournament with back-to-back 67’s) and was two strokes ahead of the next closest person.
Not only did Woods win this tournament in 2013, but he also won it in 2001. In that year, Woods’ 14-under was only a single stroke better than the next closest person – but hey – he still got the job done. A win so long ago might be a moot point to a lot of people, but it has to be a big deal to Woods as he knows he has won there multiple times. Just knowing that can give Woods a lot of confidence to go out there and just go for it.

Next, Woods actually showed a lot of promise at the Masters a couple of weeks ago. He entered the tournament having not played for nine weeks, and the feeling around the golf world was that he was going to go out there and miss the cut or embarrass himself in some way. Not only did he did avoid those two ugly fates, but he did a 180 of them and played some good golf. A 17th place finish isn’t all that impressive, but Woods had some moments of brilliance and shot back-to-back sub-70 rounds on Friday and Saturday to help make him finish 5-under for the tournament. He could string together some great rounds if he simply cleans up some of his mistakes.
The final reason that people should be optimistic is that Woods is not done yet – not even close. People have been talking about Woods as if he is on the verge of not being relevant anymore, and it doesn’t make any sense at all. Last year was thrown away by injuries as Woods only played in seven events, but do people forget what he did the previous year when he was healthy? In 2013, Woods was undoubtedly the best golfer in the world as he won five tournaments and finished in the top 10 of three others (including 4th at the Masters). That type of play from Woods is still there waiting to be shown. He simply needs to stay healthy, continue playing and good things will happen.
Hopefully Woods can start to make 2015 look a little more like 2013. Winning the Players Championship would be a great start to that.
