The current state of affairs in Baltimore has bled over into the world of sports as the Baltimore Orioles have postponed their game on Monday due to rioting.

Sometimes sports just doesn’t matter and the safety of fans, players and the community isn’t worth risking just to play ball. That’s what is going on at the moment in Baltimore, as the Orioles and White Sox will not play a game tonight as the city literally burns thanks to rioting.

Cars are on fire, windows are smashed and stores are being looted. That’s the scene in Baltimore as hundreds of citizens continue to riot following the death of  Freddie Gray at the hands of local police. It’s yet another death this year of an  African American at the hands of someone connected to a police department and the results have been horrifying for all to watch.

It’s almost like something out of a movie, as Baltimore is on fire with riots as protests have turned violent and a free-for-all seems to be in full effect.

Things aren’t under control enough for the Orioles and White Sox to play their scheduled game tonight but that’s not really what matters here. The game is going to be re-played later this year, Baltimore will simmer and the tensions will be eased. But at this current moment, there isn’t a hotter city than Baltimore and it’s on fire for all the wrong reasons.

It’s unclear when the game will be re-played, as Chicago just recently finished a game against the Kansas City Royals which was rained out one night and completed as a quasi-doubleheader the next day. Given the situation in Baltimore though, it’s unclear when the Orioles will even be able to play a home game again.

Sports are supposed to take us away from our troubles, but the Freddie Gray killing has pushed the buttons of those in Baltimore so far in that there’s no coming back. Not anytime soon anyways, and the last thing on our minds is a game of baseball — even though we need it more than we ever have before.
