With the 18th pick in Mike Mayock’s NFL mock draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Cameron Erving, center, from Florida State. Mayock has Erving rated as the second-best player at his position.

2014 Recap

Kansas City had another winning season but failed to make the playoffs with a 9-7 record. The Chiefs beat the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, but cost themselves a playoff berth with brutal losses to the Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders.

Team needs

Kansas City was active in free agency, but still lacks depth in certain areas. For starting positions, the Chiefs need a slot corner and center, along with an inside linebacker. General manager John Dorsey will also be looking for secondary options at tight end, receiver and defensive end.

Last year’s pick

Marqise Lee, WR, USC. Kansas City passed on Lee and every other receiver in the draft, taking Dee Ford, a pass-rushing outside linebacker out of Auburn. The Chiefs did not record a touchdown by a wide receiver in 2014, the first team to do that in over 50 years.

Scheduled pick

On Thursday night, the Chiefs hold the 18th-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
