With the 17th pick in Mike Mayock’s NFL mock draft, the San Diego Chargers select Todd Gurley, running back, from Georgia. Mayock has Gurley rated as the second-best player at his position.

2014 Recap

The Chargers went 9-7 for the second straight year, once again finishing in third place in the AFC West. San Diego only needed to beat Kansas City and backup quarterback Chase Daniel in Week 17 to make the postseason, but lost 19-7 at Arrowhead Stadium. Head coach Mike McCoy is now entering his third season at the helm.

Team needs

San Diego is a solid team but the holes it does have are glaring. Outside of Corey Liuget, the front seven is terrible. The Chargers desperately need a pass-rusher along with a legitimate nose tackle. Offensively, center and running back are an immediate concern.

Last year’s pick

Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State. The Chargers did take a corner, but went with Jason Verrett of TCU instead. Verrett had a promising rookie season that was cut short by injury. Denver snagged Roby with the 31st-overall selection.

Scheduled pick

On Thursday night, the Chargers hold the 17th-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
